Dear friends and colleagues! [spacer height=”-20px”]

Dear doctors and all those who have devoted their lives to caring for people with haemophilia!

On behalf of the Society of Patients with Haemophilia of Azerbaijan, I, Gulnara Huseynova, would like to welcome you to the 2018 European Haemophilia Consortium (EHC) Conference!

Gulnara Huseynova President, Society of Patients with Haemophilia of Azerbaijan

I would like to introduce you to some of the haemophilia history in our country. The first Haemophilia Treatment Center in the Transcaucasia region was established as early as 1973 in Azerbaijan, with a staff of qualified doctors and medical personnel. Patients with haemophilia came here for treatment from the neighbouring Republics of Georgia and Armenia. However, in 1990, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the center lost its importance and capabilities as many medical workers who were engaged in the treatment of haemophilia migrated to other countries.

The life of patients with haemophilia became unbearable until a team of doctors, patients and their families decided to create an association that would draw the attention of the public and government to the problems of haemophilia. We were established as a national organisation in 1997 in Baku with the aim to achieve access to coagulation factor concentrates for our patients with haemophilia.

With hard and diligent work, in 2005 we achieved state care for haemophilia in Azerbaijan. In this endeavour, we were supported by the international communities of the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) and the EHC. An invaluable contribution to our sacred cause was made by our friends and comrade-in-arms from Georgia, Turkey, Russia and Iran. Also, the enormous help we received from the beloved Gordon Clarke left a trail of achievements and kind memories. He will always live in our hearts.

To date, the country’s leadership is doing everything possible to provide factor concentrates to patients with haemophilia. But optimal health care is still in development and needs great improvement. Therefore, we continue to fight for a better future for our patients with bleeding disorders.

In 2016, we won the bid to host the 2018 EHC Conference in Azerbaijan. But due to circumstances we had no control over, the conference was moved to Brussels, Belgium, where we will all come together. This event is very significant for us and will go down in the haemophilia history of Azerbaijan.

Dear friends! Welcome to the 2018 EHC Conference in Brussels, Belgium!

Kind regards,

Gulnara Huseynova

President of the Society of Patients with Haemophilia of Azerbaijan
